New items are not as diverse as the old items and the out-of-fight strategic upgrading mechanic would suffer if items can be purchased a la carte. I liked the old shop and if there were more than the few items that exist it could work, but not in the current form.
As for MTG, I entered during Urza's Saga shortly before they changed the face of the game. I never had money to spend on really rare cards, but I did invest in the Encyclopedia software so I could play fantasy decks online - too bad that didn't really take off. Nice to know getting old and leaving your cards in a shoebox is not a singularly occurrence.
